PrestaShop, Shopify or WooCommerce: how to choose a platform

There is no best platform in the abstract. There is one that suits your business, your budget and your team better.

PrestaShop

  • Open source, hosted wherever you like and with no per-sale platform fee.
  • Very complete out of the box for ecommerce: combinations, multistore, multilingual, pricing rules.
  • Large module ecosystem, especially strong in Europe and Spain.
  • Requires hosting, updates and someone technical on hand (in-house or external).

Shopify

  • Hosted service: you do not deal with servers or updates.
  • Very quick to get started.
  • Monthly fee, app costs and transaction fees if you do not use its gateway.
  • Less control over code and data; some customisations are difficult or impossible.

WooCommerce

  • Ecommerce on top of WordPress: ideal if content is at the heart of the business.
  • Very flexible thanks to plugins.
  • With large catalogues or heavy traffic, it needs more optimisation.

Criteria for deciding

Just starting, small catalogue, no technical teamShopify
Content and the blog come first, moderate catalogueWooCommerce
Complex catalogue, B2B, several languages, custom integrationsPrestaShop
You want full control of data and code with no per-sale feePrestaShop or WooCommerce
The real cost: add up five years of platform, apps or modules, hosting, development and maintenance. The option that looks cheap in the first month is not always cheap in the long run.
