Content marketing for ecommerce: a blog that sells
A store blog is not a diary of new arrivals. Done well, it answers what your future customers are searching for and leads them to your products.
A blog in an online store makes sense if it answers the questions your customers ask before, during and after buying. If all it publishes is “New products!”, nobody reads it.
Three types of content
- Before buying: buying guides, comparisons, “how do I know what I need”. They attract traffic with purchase intent.
- During: they clear up the doubts that hold a purchase back (sizes, compatibility, installation).
- After: usage, maintenance, tips. They build loyalty and reduce returns and enquiries.
From the search to the article
Start from what people search for (keyword tools, questions your customers send to customer service, your store’s search box) and write the best article there is on that question.
Connect with the products
- Link to the related categories and products, naturally.
- Show related products at the end of the article.
- From the product page, link to the guides that help people decide.
Consistency over volume
Two good articles a month for a year are worth more than twenty in one week and then nothing. And update the ones that already get traffic: it is usually more profitable than writing a new one.
