Multichannel stock sync without overselling

Selling on several channels multiplies both sales and the risk of selling what you do not have. We explain how to keep stock in line.

When you sell at the same time on your website, in a physical shop and on one or more marketplaces, stock becomes a shared resource. If two channels sell the last unit at the same moment, someone does not get their order.

A single source of truth

Stock must live in a single place (usually the ERP or an inventory manager), and the channels must read from it and deduct from it. If each channel has its own stock and they sync with each other in a chain, errors multiply.

Sync frequency

  • Low-stock, fast-moving products: near real-time sync.
  • Everything else: every few minutes is usually enough.

Safety margins

Publishing a few units fewer than you really have on marketplaces (or marking products as out of stock once they reach a threshold) reduces overselling in exchange for the odd lost sale. It is especially useful on channels that penalise cancellations.

Reservations

A paid order must deduct stock immediately. Orders awaiting payment (bank transfer, for example) can reserve stock for a limited time.

In PrestaShop: the stock customers see is the one in stock_available. If an integration writes directly to the database, make sure it updates that table and that there is no cache still showing the old value.

Regular review

A weekly report comparing each channel’s stock with the warehouse detects in time the mismatches that the sync has not resolved.
