Product photography that sells
In an online store, the photo is the closest thing to touching the product. These guidelines improve your catalogue without needing a professional studio.
Online customers cannot touch, try or look closely at the product. The photos have to do that job. That is why they are among the investments with the best return in a store.
The photos every product needs
- Main: the product on its own, neutral background, well lit. It is the one shown in listings.
- Angles: front, side, back, the part people usually care about.
- Detail: textures, seams, connectors, finishes.
- Scale: the product in a hand, next to a familiar object or with dimensions.
- In use: the product in context, so customers can picture themselves with it.
Consistency
Same background, same light, same framing and aspect ratio across the whole catalogue. A listing with photos in a thousand different styles looks messy.
Basic technique without a studio
- Soft natural side light (next to a window, out of direct sun) or two lights with diffusers.
- White or light grey background without creases.
- A tripod, always.
- Square format for listings, with the product filling most of the frame.
For the web
- Originals of about 2000 px on each side; PrestaShop generates the sizes.
- Descriptive file names and alt text.
- Modern formats (WebP, AVIF) generated automatically.
