Stripe, Redsys or PayPal: which gateway to choose for a Spanish store
There is no perfect gateway, only combinations that cover your customers. We help you decide which ones to offer and what for.
Most Spanish stores end up offering two or three gateways. The question is which ones and for which cases.
Redsys
- The Spanish banks’ virtual POS: you sign up for it through your bank.
- Cards and, depending on the contract, Bizum.
- Fees negotiable with the bank, often competitive if you have volume.
- Payment usually on the Redsys page; supports recurring payments with the right configuration.
Stripe
- Quick sign-up and a very complete dashboard.
- Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, SEPA and other European methods.
- A very good foundation for subscriptions and recurring billing.
- Forms embedded in the store without card details passing through your server.
PayPal
- Buyer trust, especially with new customers and international sales.
- Payment without entering a card.
- Subscriptions are possible, but with its own system, separate from your store’s.
How to decide
| If… | Consider |
|---|---|
| You sell mainly in Spain by card | Redsys (card + Bizum) |
| You sell subscriptions | Stripe and/or SEPA |
| You sell to other countries or to new customers who do not know you | PayPal as well as card |
| You sell to businesses | Bank transfer and SEPA direct debit |
Fees change often and depend on your volume: always ask for the current terms before deciding.
