Installation, updates and support

This module is unsupported, but you can certainly contact us. We've used it for some clients and it works wonderfully, but as always, it's best to test it in a development environment first; don't try it directly in a live environment.

Why did we create this module?

When importing a catalog or creating products in a hurry, it's easy for many to end up with "Home" as the default category. PrestaShop doesn't warn you about this, and correcting it item by item isn't feasible in a large catalog.

We created this module to fix it once and for all: it goes through all the products and sets the main one to the most specific category in its branch.

Your breadcrumbs and structure are consistent, your customers are better oriented, and you can repeat it whenever you want.

This always happens after a bulk import, and it's noticeable in the breadcrumbs, filters, and store structure. The "Deeper Level Default Category" fixes this for the entire catalog with a single click.

Choose the most specific category for each product

For each product, it looks at the categories it already belongs to and marks the lowest one in the tree as the primary category: if it's in "Clothing" and "Clothing > Men's > Trousers," it keeps "Trousers." It excludes the root and "Home" categories whenever the product has another one, and it doesn't take into account deactivated categories.

It does not add or remove categories from any product: it only changes which one is the main one.

Why the default category matters

The customer sees the actual path to the product, not a jump from the front page.

A single main category better structures the catalog than "Home".
Filters and searches
Everything that relies on the main product category works with its corresponding category.

Once or always

From the settings, you can initiate the update whenever you want. If you frequently add products, you can schedule it: the screen displays the command for the crontab and the URL with its security token for an external cron service, as well as the number of products in the store, the date of the last successful update, and the last ten registration events.

If a product appears on two different branches of the tree , the module will use the one that appears lower in the tree order. If you prefer a different branch, manually review those products after running the module.

  • The module is reloading. Version 1.1.0 resulted in a fatal error upon loading, in any version of PrestaShop.
  • The cron URL works. The one displayed in the configuration was never accepted, and in PrestaShop 9 the server blocked it. Now it's a different one—displayed in the configuration—and it works in all versions.
  • In PrestaShop 9 the configuration screen was giving an error; it opens now.
  • The package no longer includes the team editor settings, and the update removes them from the stores that had them.
